The latest on the job market during COVD-19

Covid-19 has massively impacted businesses with many companies closing their doors, some downsizing and some going through restructures. So what does the Australian unemployment rate look like in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic? Tradingeconomics.com reports “The Employment Rate in Australia decreased to 58.4% in May 2020 from 59.5% in the previous month. It was the lowest employment rate since June 1999, amid the coronavirus crisis”.

As the employment rate statistics indicate, Covid-19 has had a huge impact on the employment market, but with businesses settling into their ‘new normal’ Seek data insights suggest employment opportunities are back on the rise. And although the employment rates are daunting and being a job seeker during the current pandemic isn’t easy, there is no better time than right now to give your resume and cover letter a facelift and prepare to get back in the game.

Seek has reported job ad volumes are increasing with “ads up 60.6% in June compared to the April 2020 average.”  With “the biggest contributors to job ad growth being Trades & Services, Healthcare & Medical, Hospitality & Tourism, Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics and Education & Training.” While this is a positive sign it is no surprise we still have a long way to go to navigate through this pandemic and the effects it has had on our working lives.

With these dramatic changes to our everyday life and the impacts on the job market, The Resume Assistant wants to support you to make informed decisions about your next career move – and provide you with the tools you need to get in front of hiring managers. Our goal is to help improve your confidence throughout the job application process and to share some insider tips for being a job seeker during a pandemic.

First of all, as I always tell candidates, looking for a new role and going through the recruitment process is a job in itself. It takes time and it takes patience and it is hard work.

Here are 5 ways to improve your odds as job seeker during the Covid-19 pandemic:

  1. Ensure your resume is up-to-date.
  2. Get networking, reach out to friends and family, expand your LinkedIn network and connect with like-minded individuals.
  3. Let your connections know you are open to new job opportunities.
  4. Don’t apply for every single job, be mindful throughout your job application process.
  5. Wake up every day as if you’re fully employed, setting daily goals and sticking to a routine will help you to approach each day with a sense of purpose, help you keep momentum and stay ahead.
